RGRS Adopts a Prairie Dog Colony
This past spring our group volunteered to help the Prairie Dog Pals with their Prairie Dog-Palooza event.  We were so impressed with their efforts that we decided to see what we could do to help them even more.

There are several colonies of prairie dogs in the Albuquerque area who are unable to get their own food due to the growing restrictions created by construction and urban sprawl.  Many will end up being hit by cars or starving in the hot days of summer.  Rio Grande Roots & Shoots chose to takeon the responsibility of feeding a colony for the 2007 Prairie Dog Season which runs from approximately March-October.

We had more than ten families volunteer to be trained and to sign up for various feeding times.  Each family provided the food for their feeding time and turned in reports about how the colony was doing.  We were able to see when the new babies came out of their burrows and watched as the colony began to cover up their burrows for the hibernation season.

We all really enjoyed this project and our group will be doing this again for the 2008 season.  If you wouldlikemore info about Prairie Dog Pals please click on this link.  If you would like to support our efforts by sponsoring a week of food for the colony please click on the donate button below.
