Before the RGRS group was even formed a couple of families had already joined together to adopt ten acres of bosque land to care for, and assist in it's monitoring. This being a large task for two families with young children the idea of having our group take it over as an ongoing project was proposed. Of course we were thrilled to do so. We have been able to visit our space as a recreational location where the kids can climb play and make their own nature discoveries as well as working to remove underbrush to help prevent fires from spreading out of control, to setting up monitoring projects such as well water monitoring, tree measuring and water sampling. This has been a favorite project for us for the past year and we hope to continue our work here for many years to come.
In 2006 we held our peace picnic in the bosque and used the opportunity to walk the banks of the rio grande flying our Peace Dove while being observed by a coyote off in the distance. It doesnt get much better than that.
As a group we try to do at least four bosque clean-ups per year. This is helpful to the area, but it also brings the families out to the riverside during each of the four seasons. This allows for the new discoveries of flowers, wildlife and the ever changing river with each season. I think if it were up to the kids, we would visit FAR more often!!!
Currently we are working on a Bosque Buddies guide, to be downloaded from this site and others as a free .pdf file. The guide will be for families to print out and take with them as they spend some time exploring the bosque. It will have tips, activities and ideas to make your experience even better. Check back to download your copy!! |
