2005 peace picnic
Our first Peace Picnic was a huge success!  We met at a local park after sending out an announcement to the general homeschooling community.  We had 23 families register to become a part of this little start-up group.  We decided to get together in the park and come together with the idea of making new friends and learning more about what Roots & Shoots is all about.  We played cooperative games such as three-legged races and made our BIG Peace Dove as well as the little doves from recycled materials.
Each child was able to say what the word "peace" means to them and we wrote them out on long stips of fabric and added thm to the poles of our dove.
2006 peace picnic
In 2006 we moved our picnic to our adopted bosque acreage where we could be surrounded by the natural forest and take a hike along the river banks.  We flew our dove right up to the waters edge where we were being watched by a curious coyote off in the distance.  The peace picnic is such a positive way to start off our season and to get us all in the mood for what the coming year has in store for us.
2007 peace picnic
2007 brought our Peace Picnic to the Open Space Visitors Center where we were joined by a representative from the New Mexico Solar Energy Association.  He brought several examples of how solar energy can power our lifestyle.  The kids all enjoyed participating in the demonstration and making their own solar ovens.
It was great to have been able to participate in this international event for three years now.  We have made a lot of memories and watched our children grow together while making a difference in our community.
